Free Software Pays

Australian open source workers earn more money – Jobs Centre – www.itnews.com.au
IT workers who specialise in free and open source software are earning more than the national average for IT, according to the results of Australia’s first open source census.
The average full time salary of respondents to the Australian Open Source Industry and Community Census was between $76,000 and $100,000, but the 10 percent working on open source full time were earning “a lot more” according Pia Waugh of Waugh Partners consultancy, which conducted the survey.
“The people who were working on free software full time were earning more than the average for the general community,” she said.

This is probably because they were already the most intelligent and best qualified workers in the first place. Naturally they would choose open source software, and the savings on licence fees would help to pay for their extra salary!

The survey is not justified. It appears that survey had been done only to promote so called open source code. Where is the survey report.

Have a Good Day.

No one at Microsoft does, or ever will understand anything about OpenSource. Not what is is, or why it works, much less how it works.
They only understand “the company”, and not the community.
In OpenSource the authors, the product, the users and those who make their living from the resulting revenue stream are “the company.”
The whole idea of allowing all that revenue to be distributed to others outside of their company is totally foreign, and they simply can’t fathom a community working that way.
They are driven by wealth, not technology.

They work on computers for the love of money. We work on computers for the love of technology and to better the world and perhaps even save the world from idiots like them. All in all, our work saves lives, their work takes lives.
