More open source software should be used by governments, not just in the USA but over here in the UK and other countries. Open source software should be used more in schools over the world as well, I am not saying we should stop using Windows on the desktop and force everyone to use Open Office and Linux desktops. But for the backend & servers we could be making use of open source software like Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP etc and use more open source virtualization to save money on costs.

Schools / Governments all seem very keen to use Exchange Server for their email servers often as they can't support Linux & open source software with their existing IT departments and think that paying a Linux Consultant or using Outsourced IT will cost them more than the licensing costs for Microsoft products.

I can remember when I moved to NYC in 1981 clutching my sub-mediocre plays far too tightly. I was horrified when someone told me my work was my resume. I didn't know than that what I had written wasn't really worth lifting; nor could I acknowledge in my arrogant ignorance that there was probably nothing very original in my work.

Now I teach arts & humanities in a middle school in Kentucky. Kozinski's words could not ring more true!

I actually agree with you.

I think the hope is that the more open source software is deployed, the more companies will spring up to support it. Having technology based on open standards allows "customers" to find the "vendor" who serves them best. That's what you pay for with free software, someone to blame, someone to help you.

The value is in the support, but also the drastically reduced R&D costs, when all the work of development is spread around the community.

Reaching that critical mass is important, but it's happening.

As a developer who has worked on open source projects, and been something of an evangelist for it's use on various corporate projects, I can appreciate the frustrations on all side of this argument.

Something else the article doesn't cover - those who are buying software like to have somebody to be held liable. Paying for a product makes that easier to think about.
